The Importance of Miracles, Signs, and Wonders In The Church Today
Four of us in the church here in Chandler, Arizona, are reading through The One Year Bible. Today's Old Testament reading was in Judges. Here’s what stuck out to me…
“And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel…
…And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.” - Judges 2:7, 10
The people who stayed faithful to God were the ones who saw the great works of the Lord and knew God in power. It wasn’t history to them. The supernatural wasn’t just hearsay from way back when; His power was very present. Manna…quail…water from a rock…the parting of the Jordan River…the falling walls of Jericho…the lopsided battles they won, etc. God was with them. They knew it, and every nation around them knew it too.
Mark 16:17-18 says,
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
Is God powerful in our lives today? Are the churches in our houses known in the community for miracles and the supernatural gifts of the Spirit? If not, perhaps we should find out why.
Sin, a lack of godly order, discord, false doctrine, and other important reasons may be preventing God from moving powerfully in our midst. According to Matt 13, Jesus did not many mighty works in his hometown because of their unbelief. But if we seek the Lord and align ourselves to his word, he will do wonders for his glory!
Acts 4:29-31 says,
“And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”
Being pure vessels of honor that God can demonstrate his power through is probably one of the greatest ways to serve this and the next generation.
